The 355 by evoluto

Designed and engineered by CALLUM.

  • The 355 by Evoluto® meticulously reimagines and re-engineers the iconic 90s Italian supercar to deliver a ‘peak analogue’, tactile driving experience combined with state-of-the-art technology, limited to just 55 bespoke units.

CALLUM developed its new, more muscular exterior design in collaboration with Evoluto, and created the entirely revised interior that went through extensive re-engineering by CALLUM’s highly experienced and trained teams. CALLUM delivered designs and rapid low volume production engineering to ensure the dynamic prototype of the 355 by Evoluto® is production feasible.

  • With preliminary aesthetic ideas in mind, Evoluto approached CALLUM to support the redesign of the car’s exterior body through initial sketch work, computer aided styling (CAS) and A surface release.

CALLUM set about developing its stance and proportions while evoking the heritage of the classic Ferrari 355 and staying true to its original ethos. The result is a more muscular physique with well-resolved surfaces and taut lines that balance an expression of power and beauty, while an increased track width enhances its strong stance.

One particular challenge was balancing the aesthetic with the vehicle’s cooling targets. CALLUM worked closely with Evoluto and its exterior engineering partner to create a design that accommodates these requirements, resulting in an all-new front-end that includes larger and deeper cooling intakes. A re-shaped front splitter is framed by new LED pop-up headlights, with a distinctive new DRL signature and intricate surface detailing. A complementary new wheel design further enhances its powerful appearance.

For the interior, CALLUM’s design team undertook sketching and theme work to create multiple full interior iterations, incorporating the specification preferences of Evoluto and its partners.

The brief was to create a driver-centric cockpit – screen free to achieve the ‘peak analogue’ intention of the vehicle – that kept the feel of the wrap-around Ferrari interior but in a cleaner, edited way. From a materials perspective, Alcantara and carbon were prioritised. Premium, cold touch machined metal elements convey the raw nature of the car, with three centre switches nodding to the three dials in the icon’s original interior.

Working closely with Evoluto to achieve its vision, design reviews and development were undertaken, with a final design agreed upon and put into CAS development.

  • CALLUM provided rapid low volume production engineering in a compressed six-month timescale, developing an ultra-luxurious cabin interior that meets the highest standards of excellence, quality and precision, while being production feasible in its design, materials and engineering. The state-of-the-art interior was re-engineered to seamlessly integrate the latest technology and ensure modern functionality, supported by expert craftsmanship and luxury materials.

The project required extensive reverse engineering. Utilising detailed 3D scans of the existing 355 exterior and interior, the CALLUM team was able to modify and redesign surfaces and components through computer aided engineering (CAE). Newly created and tooled surfaces were digitally overlaid on the scans to refine and validate them, ensuring they met design specifications, functional requirements, and manufacturing constraints.

Additive manufacturing was used for rapid and cost-effective prototyping of redesigned and re-engineered components. Tested for fit, form and function in the real world, the new components were honed to ensure quality and accurate fitment for a refined, luxurious in-cabin experience.

CALLUM created new dash substrates and billet aluminium centre console, with revised gauges and dash dials, revamped with fresh graphics and components. Bespoke switchgear was re-engineered, incorporating modern logic to ensure all functions are intuitive, user-friendly and reliable. New PCBs manage the signals, centralising the functionality. Great attention was given to the exploration and meticulous refinement of the switch feel to ensure it is satisfyingly tactile, with the new, client-approved switchgear then integrated back into the original vehicle.

CALLUM’s in-house electrical capability supported the development of the cabin switchgear harness design and manufacture.

CALLUM also developed new door mechanisms and release pulls to ensure the 90s car remains functional for future generations. The only interior element not touched by CALLUM was the dash air vents, which were developed by DRVN Automotive.

“Creating a special and updated version of an iconic car such as the 355 is challenging. It requires total understanding of the boundaries of change. However, the team at CALLUM enjoyed bringing together new forms and details to produce a beautiful design, while fully respecting the original.”

— Ian Callum, Design Director at CALLUM.

“This project spanned a number of CALLUM capabilities and service offerings to deliver rapid low volume production engineering in a short time frame. Initial 3D scanning supported the CALLUM design team’s iterative sketches, which were then translated by the engineering team into bespoke components, switches and gauges. All elements were developed and refined with the utmost care, attention and consideration for the end user and their enjoyment of this luxury renovated exterior and interior.”

— Adam Donfrancesco, Engineering Director at CALLUM.

“We wanted to design something that felt period correct but also contemporary in its resolution. It achieves the fine balance of a race-car-like analogue feel with the modern luxury appropriate for a GT. Developing such a car is a capability and balancing act that we’ve explored and honed with the CALLUM Vanquish 25, and enjoy the opportunity to give such exquisite machines new life and a more modern outlook.”
